The Old Testament Background of Paul's Reference to
"the Fruit of the Spirit" in Galatians 5:22 1
G. K. Beale
“The fruit of the Spirit” in Gal 5:22 and its manifestations appear to be a
general allusion to Isaiah’s promise that the Spirit would bring about
abundant fertility in the coming new age. Uppermost in mind are Isaiah’s
repeated prophecies (especially chap. 32 and, above all, 57) that in the new
creation the Spirit would be the bearer of plentiful fruitfulness, which Isa-
iah often interprets to be godly attributes such as righteousness, patience,
peace, joy, holiness, and trust in the Lord, traits either identical or quite
similar to those in Gal 5:22–23. Paul’s rhetorical effect and thematic em-
phasis are increased by the readers’ being able to situate themselves as
those who are part of the dawning eschatological promises made to Israel,
and hence they are true Israelites who play a significant role in this cosmic
redemptive-historical drama. If they are really part of this drama, then they
will pay heed to Paul’s exhortations.
Key Words: fruit, Spirit, inaugurated eschatology, new creation, Isaiah 32

The Angels under Reserve in 2 Peter and Jude 39
J. Daryl Charles
In both 2 Peter and Jude, the reader encounters the rebellious angels, a par-
adigm of hard-heartedness that appears frequently in Jewish tradition. In
both epistles, OT characters and events (and exegetical traditions extend-
ing from them) are paraenetic rather than didactic in nature. That is, they
are illustrative and serve as moral types to warn the reader. In their func-
tion the rebellious angels constitute an important weapon in the rhetorical
arsenal of both writers. Despite similarities in their appearance, they func-
tion in slightly different ways in the two epistles, suggesting a literary-
rhetorical strategy that is unique to each writer.

Inaugurating the Kingdom of God and Defeating
the Kingdom of Satan 49
Craig A. Evans
IBR Jesus Project Paper 3. The exorcisms of Jesus constitute an essential
component in his proclamation of the kingdom (or rule) of God. It is in-
creasingly recognized that Jesus’ message and ministry cannot be ade-
quately understood if the exorcisms are not taken into account. The present
essay argues that the exorcisms signify the reduction and destruction of
Satan’s kingdom, as God’s kingdom breaks into the world.

Moving from Scripture to Doctrine 77
Elmer A. Martens
The topic invites inquiry. How do we of the church, once the Bible has been
exegeted, proceed to formulate doctrine? To answer that question I propose
first to do a brief historical sweep, from which I will draw several pertinent
observations. A theoretical discussion will follow that explores the thesis of
the paper, namely, that we move from Scripture to doctrine via biblical the-
ology. Lest we get lost in the cyberspace of the theoretical, I include two
case studies, one dealing with atonement and a second with divorce. Fi-
nally, the preacher within me says we must end with a challenge, specifi-
cally some exhortations.

The Purpose and Preservation of the Jesus Tradition
Moderate Evidence for a Conserving Force in
Its Transmission 161
Michael F. Bird
An important preface to historical Jesus research involves formulating a theory of the transmission of the traditions underlying the Gospels. Scholarship frequently exhibits either an inherent skepticism towards trying to uncover how this tradition was handled or else is saturated with multiple proposals concerning the means of its formation. In any event, important questions to be asked include what purpose the Jesus tradition had in early Christian circles and what factors or controls may have enabled that tradition to be effectively preserved. This study addresses such questions and, with careful qualification, contends that the Jesus tradition probably had a variety of functions in the early church and there were several reasons why the words and deeds of Jesus may have been consciously preserved.

The Eschatological Temple in John 14 187
Steven M. Bryan
In an article published in Tyndale Bulletin in 1993, the eminent Cambridge scholar Ernst Bammel offered the following bare assertion in regard to John 14:2: “The house with the many mansions is, of course, the temple.” This stands against the tide of scholarly opinion on the text which identifies “my Father’s house” as heaven. On this understanding, Jesus promises to return to heaven in order to prepare rooms which will serve as the final heavenly abode of his followers. However, several lines of evidence suggest that Bammel’s intuition that the text was speaking about the temple was correct. What follows then is an attempt to show that John 14:2-3 refers to a heavenly temple which Jesus makes ready through his death and resurrection to serve as the eternal dwelling of his followers in the presence of God.

Femme Fatale Redux: Intertextual Connection to
the Elijah/Jezebel Narratives in Mark 6:14-29 199
David M. Hoffeditz and Gary E. Yates
The article demonstrates that the account of the beheading of John the Baptist in Mark 6:14-29 echoes the OT narratives surrounding Elijah and Jezebel and develops three specific connections between the characters of Jezebel and Herodias (their evil influence on their husbands, their connection to sexual promiscuity, and their life and death struggle with a confrontational prophet). The Markan account introduces a surprise element into the story with the death of John, enabling Mark to portray the Baptizer as Elijah redivivus and to connect the suffering of John and Jesus.

Jesus' Royal Entry into Jerusalem 223
Brent Kinman
IBR Jesus Project Paper 4. Critical examination of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem yields the conclusion that Jesus orchestrated for himself a provocative, royal entry to the city. The entry thus represents a significant shift in his self-presentation to Israel and sheds light on his trial before Pilate and his crucifixion. Nevertheless, despite its dramatic tone, it was modest in size and easily overlooked by the Roman authorities at Passover.

Cultural Criticism and Biblical Hermeneutics
Definition, Origins, Benefits, and Challenges 261
Gerald A. Klingbeil
Over the past 30 years, methods of hermeneutics in the context of biblical
studies have diversified impressively. Even for the specialist it is often chal-
lenging to stay up-to-date in the labyrinth of new methodologies and pro-
posals for biblical interpretation. Over the past decade, cultural criticism has
become an important critical tool and has gained significant recognition. In
the present study I seek, first, to define this hermeneutical phenomenon and
describe its origins in the larger context of humanities. This is followed, sec-
ond, by a summary of the methods, hermeneutical presuppositions and ap-
plications of cultural criticism by some of its more important practitioners.
Third, I seek to evaluate how evangelical scholarship has reacted to and in-
teracted with cultural criticism. Finally, some of the possible challenges of
and benefits to a Bible-based hermeneutic are presented, including its mis-
siological repercussions.

The Kingdom of Heaven in Kindred Systems,
Judaic and Christian 279
Jacob Neusner
“Kingdom of Heaven” figures prominently in one Judaic system, forms part
of the background of another, and plays no role whatsoever in a third, which
makes possible the comparison and contrast of Judaisms. What is at stake in
this exercise is how and whether “Kingdom of Heaven” functions as a cate-
gory-formation in the Aggadic theology as it does in the Evangelists’ ac-
count of Jesus’ teaching and the media framed to bear that message. In
Aggadic and Halakic contexts, by contrast, the theme of God’s rule pervades,
but the particularization of that theme as “Kingdom of Heaven” forms no
more than an inert category-formation, one that figures as part of the back-
ground of ideas that everywhere inhere but nowhere take an active, genera-
tive role.
Key Words: Kingdom of God, Kingdom of Heaven, Qaddish, category-

The Anointing of Saul according to Josephus 1
Christopher T. Begg
1 Samuel 9:1–10:16, the account of the anointing of Saul by Samuel, constitutes
one of the key passages of the book of Samuel. This essay studies Josephus’s re-
telling of the biblical passage in Ant. 6.45–59. The investigation focuses on three
main questions: the text-form(s) of the biblical account used by Josephus; the re-
writing techniques he employs and the distinctive version of the anointing nar-
rative that results from their application; and Josephus’s handling of the episode
in relation to other early treatments of it.

Off the Beaten Track: An Evangelical Reading of
the Psalms without Gunkel 25
Martin G. Klingbeil
Since the inception of form criticism, evangelical theology has tried to define its
relationship with its main proponent, Hermann Gunkel. This article tries to ana-
lyze this ambiguous relationship by means of reviewing interpretive tendencies
of major Psalms commentaries from 1935 to 2003 while trying to locate evan-
gelical scholarship within this panorama. One of the conclusions of this brief re-
view is that evangelical scholarship has tagged behind when it could have been
in the lead.

The Nations in Isaiah: Friend or Foe; Servant or Partner 41
John N. Oswalt
The book of Isaiah contains a more comprehensive treatment of the rest of the
nations of the world than do most of the other biblical prophetic books. It ad-
dresses the nations in a variety of ways, but when this variety is looked at in the
light of the present structure of the book, it may be argued that Israel’s relation-
ship to the nations becomes the skeleton around which the book’s theology is
structured. This article seeks to explore how that structuring takes place and
how it affects both the purpose and the message of the book in its present form.
Key Words: Isaiah, nations, restoration, worship, glory of God
"Will a Man Rob God?" (Malachi 3:8): A Study of Tithing
in the Old and New Testaments 53
Andreas J. Köstenberger and David A. Croteau
Is tithing, that is, giving ten percent of one’s income, obligatory for Christians?
This first in a series of two articles investigates this question by studying all ref-
erences to tithing in Scripture. The discussion commences with OT references to
tithing prior to the giving of the Mosaic Law, then in the Mosaic Law, the his-
torical, and the prophetic books. This is followed by a study of the three major NT
passages on tithing. The article concludes that none of the OT or NT passages can
legitimately be used to argue for the continuation of tithing in the new covenant
period.

Did Jesus Quote Isaiah 29:13 against the Pharisees?
An Unpopular Appraisal 79
Thomas R. Hatina
In contrast to the widely held view that the saying in Mark 7:5–7 is a Markan
redaction, this article argues that the exchange between Jesus and the Pharisees
is thoroughly at home in an inter-Jewish (non-Christian) polemic concerning the
ideology of purity and thus may well be more historical, or earlier, than is often
thought. More specifically, it is argued that the function of Isa 29:13 as a scrip-
tural support for the denunciation of the “tradition of the elders” finds its closest
parallel in the targumic interpretive tradition and not in the early church.

Honor and Shame Rhetoric as a Unifying Motif in Ephesians 105
Peter W. Gosnell
New Testament scholarship increasingly recognizes the importance of honor and
shame dynamics for understanding biblical texts. That recognition has not been
applied to studies in Ephesians in a consistently developed way. The present ar-
ticle offers a detailed exploration of Ephesians’ persistent regard for honor and
shame. This pervasive motif unifies the epistle’s varied contents. Its pervasive-
ness has significant implications for understanding both the purpose and content
of the letter.

Delighting in the Sufferings of Others:
Early Chrisitan Schadenfreude and the Function of the
Apocalypse of Peter 129
Michael J. Gilmour
Fantasies of eschatological retribution in early Christian literature seem incon-
gruous with Jesus’ teachings about forgiveness and the love of enemies. This pa-
per proposes that the Christian victims of violence addressed by the Apocalypse
of Peter were conflicted. On the one hand they were aware that Jesus expected
them to respond lovingly to their persecutors, but on the other they experienced
a very normal emotional response known as Schadenfreude—finding joy in the
sufferings of others. It is argued here that ‘Peter’ attempts to justify his/their vio-
lent fantasies by demonstrating the propriety of finding pleasure in the expecta-
tion that the wicked would be punished.

The Septuagint and the Text of the Old Testament 193
Peter J. Gentry
This paper assesses the importance and relative worth of the witness of the Sep-
tuagint to the text of the OT. Proper methodology is established for using a ver-
sion as a textual witness, and general guidelines are given concerning the
relationship between the Septuagint and Masoretic Text and the worth of the
Septuagint in relation to other witnesses to the text of the OT (Dead Sea Scrolls,
Syriac, Targums, Vulgate).
Key Words: Septuagint, OT Textual Criticism, Ancient Versions
When God Spoke Greek: The Place of the Greek Bible
In Evangelical Scholarship 219
Karen H. Jobes
The Septuagint was the OT of the Christian church for centuries because it was
the Scripture of Israel in its Greek form that was used extensively by the NT
writers and the early Church fathers. From the time of the Reformation, the He-
brew Masoretic Text has eclipsed the place of the Septuagint in Protestant schol-
arship. This article, originally delivered as a plenary lecture at the IBR meeting
in 2004, argues for a place for the Septuagint in evangelical scholarship that
moves beyond textual criticism of the Hebrew Bible and the discussion of canon.
New Testament exegesis that refers to the Hebrew text where the NT authors
were in fact using the Greek OT is methodologically flawed, as is biblical theology
that fails to give the Septuagint its historical due as a literary and theological

Reconstructing a Biblical Model for Giving:
A Discussion of Relevant Systematic Issues
and New Testament Principles 237
Andreas J. Köstenberger and David A. Croteau
In a previous article the authors discussed all relevant references to tithing in
Scripture and concluded that the continuation of a tithing requirement cannot be
adequately supported by the exegesis of individual texts. In the present article,
we assess the applicability of tithing in light of pertinent systematic issues. Fol-
lowing a discussion of the relationship between the Mosaic Law and the new
covenant, larger systematic issues that have been used to argue for the continu-
ation of tithing are analyzed and criticized. The article concludes with a survey
of NT principles for giving.

Translating paralutikoj in Mark 2:1-12: A Proposal 261
Dwight N. Peterson
The man who is healed by Jesus in Mark 2:1–12 is denoted in the text by the word
paralutikoj, which is usually translated ‘paralytic’. The problem with this trans-
lation by transliteration is that it is by no means clear that the man in view was
“paralyzed” in any modern sense of the word. A word study ofparalutikoj,
along with related words paraluvein and paralutikoj, in and beyond the NT shows
the lack of etiological, diagnostic, and prognostic specificity that characterizes
ancient medical language when compared with modern technical medical termi-
nology. This means that in Mark 2, we do not know what was “wrong” with the
“paralytic,” other than that he could not walk. The possible causes of his condi-
tion are numerous: stroke, head injury, twisted or badly broken legs that did not
heal properly, severe arthritis, or even a psychosomatic condition, to name but a
few possibilities. All of these conditions and many others could easily result in a
situation in which a person “cannot walk.” A good translation of the word in this
context, then, ought to be nonspecific and nontechnical by modern standards and
ought not to draw attention to the cause of the man’s condition. I, a paraplegic
who uses a wheelchair, suggest that the word ‘cripple’ fits the bill but provide al-
ternative translation possibilities for those who cannot countenance the use of
this word, which comes across as offensive to many people.

Metaphors and Pragmatics: An Introduction to the
Hermeneutics of Metaphors in the
Epistle to the Ephesians 273
Gerald A. Klingbeil
This article seeks first to understand recent methodological discussions in meta-
phor research in the context of biblical and theological studies. Metaphors are
complex literary devices that require familiarity with the world view and histori-
cal context of the respective author of a particular ancient text and also commu-
nicate on an experiential level. The multiplicity and polyvalence of metaphors
together with their ability to create tension requiring reorientation make them
ideal rhetorical tools. In this sense metaphors connect perfectly with pragmatics,
which does not focus upon form, significance, sounds, or structure but, rather,
upon the strategies that authors employ to communicate effectively. Based upon
these considerations, a metaphor map of the Epistle to the Ephesians is drawn,
recognizing ten main metaphors with many more connected submetaphors. Fi-
nally, the study presents a concise evaluation of the metaphor map, focusing
upon authorial strategies and the main metaphorical components such as “fam-
ily,” “body,” and “position.”

The Invention and Argumentative Function of
Priestly Discourse in the Epistle of the Hebrews 295
David A. deSilva
This article examines the rhetorical contribution of intertexture, particularly
from the First Testament, to the development of “priestly discourse” in Hebrews.
The rhetorical analysis of each instance of intertexture within sections evocative
of priestly discourse is followed by the construction of an intertextual “map” of
the Hebrew Scriptures, Jesus traditions, and Pauline traditions contributing to
priestly discourse in Hebrews. The foregoing analysis and intertextual map pro-
vide the data for an analysis of the strategic selection from and re-presentation
of the larger “story line” of priestly discourse and become the basis for concluding
suggestions concerning the inner “logic” of priestly discourse. Hebrews nur-
tures the premises that initiative remains with the Deity to establish the space,
name the priestly agents, determine what sacrifices are acceptable, and decide
what benefits will be offered, making priestly discourse inherently “traditional”
as it goes about legitimating sacerdotal arrangements in the authoritative ex-
pressions of the divine will. The retention of more ancient rites as archetypes for
the newer also evidences this inherent conservatism, seen most baldly in the use
of the topic of the “necessary” in Heb 9–10. Finally, argumentation in priestly
discourse evinces the logic of social codes of reciprocity and of approaching social
superiors for needed benefits.

The Role of the Birkath Haminim in Early Jewish-Christian
Relations: A Reexamination of the Evidence 325
Philip L. Mayo
The publication of the Genizah version of the Birkath Haminim a century ago
ignited renewed interest in the impact of this Jewish “blessing” on early Jewish-
Christian relations. Several scholars have seen in this text evidence for an early
and decisive event in the separation of Jews and Christians. Recent scholarship,
however, has retreated from this conclusion, questioning the impact of the bene-
diction. A reexamination of the evidence will help shed some light on this debate.

Leviticus 24:15b-16: A Crux Revisited 345
Bernon P. Lee
The occurrence of wyhla in the first law (v. 15b) of Lev 24:15b–16 has led to the
understanding that the law envisions a distinct circumstance (for example, an
insult directed at other deities) in contrast to that of the second law in v. 16 (an
insult directed at the name of God). This article argues that both laws (vv. 15b
and 16) have the same case in view (explicitly stated in v. 16) by demonstrating
that the use of wyhla is part of a literary pattern displaying a movement toward
specificity through the course of vv. 15b–16.

I Would Be Who I Would Be! A Proposal for

Randall J. Pannell
The notion of this short note is to propose a reading of the aehyeh aåser aehyeh
phrase of Exod 3:14 in light of the Hebrew cohortative. The focus of this reading
is that God is presented as speaking of his will, wish, and/or desire with regard
to who he is. As a response to the Mosaic question “What shall I say to them
when they ask, ‘What is his name?’” this opens new possibilities for the exegesis
of this verse as well as for the meaning of the Tetragrammaton.

"How Can I Understand, Unless Someone Explains It to Me?"
(Acts 8:30-31): Evangelicals and Biblical Hermeneutics 1
Iain Provan
This article explores the question: What kind of biblical hermeneutics ought
evangelical Christians to embrace for themselves and to advocate to others? It
takes as its starting point the Chicago Statement on Biblical Hermeneutics (1982)
and subjects this document to an extended critical reflection. The Statement, it is
concluded, is in various ways an unsatisfactory articulation of evangelical
hermeneutics, if hermeneutics is about helping people to perceive “what
the biblical revelation means and how it bears on our lives” ( Chicago Statement,
Article IX). In the second part of the article, an alternative articulation is
then attempted.

"All Those Going Out of the Gate of Hist City": Have the

Andrew J. Schmutzer
The phrase wry[ r[ç yaxyAlk (Gen 34:24a, b) is part of the narrator’s summary
of the Shechemites’ response to the circumcision proposal. The lexical and seman-
tic evidence supports a military collocation for the phrase. Moreover, the lan-
guage surrounding Abraham’s transaction at the city gate with Ephron (Gen
23:10b, 18b) is shown to be an inadequate semantic parallel, depending more on
culture and architecture. This article argues that the repetition of the phrase in
the same verse (34:24a, b) reflects the narrator’s rhetorical skill that “humanizes”
a catastrophe, underscoring its distributive and irreversible state. By arguing
more for “elders” or “citizens,” the translations have missed the narrator’s asso-
ciation of the circumcised group with a war idiom.

Blasphemy and the Jewish Examination of Jesus 53

IBR Jesus Project 5. This article represents another contribution to the IBR
Jesus Group and covers issues of background, historicity, and significance asso-
ciated with the Jewish examination of Jesus by the leaders of Judaism. It argues
that the core of this account is historical by working systematically through
Mark’s use of the theme of blasphemy, the question of whether the Jews had the
right to execute Jesus legally, and potential witnesses, as well as examining the
themes of Jesus’ potential blasphemy and how Jews saw the potential for exalta-
tion. The work represents an updating of my Blasphemy and Exaltation mono-

The following article, which will be continued in the next issue of BBR, offers
disparate exegetical notes on six passages in the Fourth Gospel. Part 1 argues
(1) for the menorah as at least partial background for the portrayal of the Word
as light and life in John 1:4; (2) for the angels in John 1:51 as representing Christ
in his function as a message-bearer going up and down Jacob’s ladder between
heaven and earth; and (3) for the profuse passing of water in consequence of
drinking it in John 7:37–39 as a symbol of the superabundance of life given be-

"Children of Promise": Spiritual Paternity and Patriarch
Typology in Galatians and Romans 131
Günther H. Juncker
This article begins by asking whether Paul’s second reference to “Israel” in Rom
9:6b refers to the faithful Jewish remnant alone or to the eschatological people of
God comprising believing Jews and Gentiles together and suggests that a satis-
factory answer can be obtained if this verse is viewed in the larger context of
Paul’s discourse in which the patriarchs repeatedly play a determinative and pre-
dominantly typological role in marking out the boundaries of God’s eschatologi-
cal people. The remainder of the article closely examines Gal 3 and 4:21–31 as
well as Rom 4 and 9:7–13 in order to demonstrate that there is an underlying
hermeneutical consistency to Paul’s typological use of the patriarchs and that this
consistency is supportive of the view that “Israel” in Rom 9:6b refers to spiritual
Israel—that is, the church.

Toward an Assessment of Divine Plurality in the Hebrew Bible
Michael S. Heiser
Academic editor, Logos Bible Software
Bible has long been the subject of scholarly debate. The dominant
critical consensus since the late nineteenth century holds that
faith evolved from polytheism or henotheism to monotheism. Passages in
the Hebrew Bible that assume the existence of other gods are compared to
other passages that put forth the declaration that “there are no other gods
besides” the God of Israel as proof of this view. Other scholars who reject
this evolutionary paradigm tend to assume passages evincing divine plurality
actually speak of human beings, or that the other gods are merely
idols. This view insists that “monotheism” must mean that the existence
of other gods is denied. Both views are problematic and fall short of doing
justice to the full description of
in the Hebrew Bible. This article overviews the difficulties of each view
and offers a coherent alternative.
Speaking Truthfully: Job’s Friends and Job
Elaine A. Phillips
Gordon
One of the critical challenges of the book of Job lies in the apparent
discord between
the strident declarations of Job in the course of the poetic dialogues and
God’s affirmation of Job’s words at the end of the book. Equally puzzling is
the
precise nature of God’s stinging rebuke of the three friends. A resolution
to these
conundrums might rest in an alternative interpretation of the Hebrew in Job
42:7-8.
Prophets, Parables, and Theologians
Klyne Snodgrass
North Park
This article addresses three questions concerning parables: Why did
Jesus teach
in parables? What classification of parables should be used? And how should
theology
be done from the parables? Parables were used effectively by the OT
prophets,
and Jesus used parables because he came as a prophet with a prophet’s
agenda.
Søren Kierkegaard’s discussion of indirect communication provides a basis
for a
more effective classification system than Adolf Jülicher’s fourfold system.
The
prophetic use of parables and the classification system provide a basis for
thinking
about how theology is done from the parables.
The Ending of Mark
Robert H. Stein
The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary,
With the recognition that Mark 16:8 is the most authentic ending of the
second
Gospel, debate has raged over whether this is the Evangelist’s intended
ending or
whether his intended ending was lost. In the first part of the 20th century,
the
predominant view was that the original ending had been lost, but in the
latter
part of the century this was replaced by the view that 16:8 was Mark’s
intended
ending, and numerous attempts were made to explain how 16:8 serves as a
fitting
ending for the Gospel. The present article seeks to demonstrate that 16:8 is
not
the Evangelist’s intended ending. The two main arguments given are that Mark
14:28 and 16:7 are Markan insertions that point to a postresurrection
meeting
of Jesus and the disciples in
would have left this prophecy unfulfilled by ending abruptly with 16:8. This
would be the only unfulfilled prophecy of Jesus in Mark except for the
prophecy
concerning his parousia. The second argument is that in contrast to modern
reader-response interpretations of 16:1–8, the emphasis of these verses is
not
about the disciples and their failures but on Jesus Christ, the Son of God
(1:1),
and the key verses are 16:6–7 and not 16:8.

1 Cor 6:12–20. Yet the context and form of 6:12–20 suggest that at least
some of
these words should be read as interjections from real Corinthian
interlocutors. In
order to verify this thesis, I argue for (1) the presence of diatribal
features in 6:12–
20 and (2) the features that indicate that Paul has made a special
adaptation of
the diatribal form to address real Corinthian interlocutors. The structure
of
Paul’s diatribe suggests the presence of Corinthian slogans in vv. 12, 13,
and 18.
The Laying on of Hands in 1 Timothy 5:22: A New
Proposal
Brian P. Irwin
Knox
In 1 Tim 5:22, the author of the letter tells the recipient to avoid “laying
hands
on anyone quickly.” Traditionally, this phrase has been understood to refer
to an
action related either to ordination or to the receiving back into fellowship
of
lapsed believers. Neither view, however, is without difficulties. This
article examines
the various uses of the phrase “lay hands on” in the LXX and the Greek
NT and argues that the best understanding of the phrase in 1 Tim 5:22 is to
associate
it with the manner in which hands are imposed as a sign of accusation.
Thus, the passage refers neither to ordination nor to receiving lapsed
believers
but stands as a caution against hastily accusing an elder of wrongdoing.

Jesus Loved”: Witness, Author, Apostle
A Response to Richard Bauckham’s Jesus and the Eyewitnesses
Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary
Richard Bauckham’s Jesus and the Eyewitnesses: The Gospels as Eyewitness
Testimony (Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 2006) makes a persuasive argument
that the Gospels display eyewitness testimony and thus renews the quest for
the
identity of the Beloved Disciple as the author of the Fourth Gospel. While
Bauckham
attributes this Gospel to “the presbyter John” mentioned by Papias, the
authors
of this study show that the patristic evidence more likely seems to support
the authorship of John the apostle and that the literary device of inclusio
in the
Fourth Gospel, astutely observed by Bauckham, also favors the authorship of
John
the son of Zebedee.
Jewish
Opposition to Christians in Asia Minor in the First Century
Trinity
Evangelical Divinity School
This study examines the reasons for the opposition of the Jews of Roman Asia
Minor to the Jewish Christian missionaries and their teaching. It will be
seen that
while theological convictions played a significant role, the opposition in
the local
synagogues cannot be explained only with reference to the Jews’ zeal for the
law
and for the purity of the Jewish community. The available evidence,
particularly
of Josephus, suggests that the Jews of
social and political rights and privileges that they had enjoyed since
Julius Caesar,
which had come under pressure in different places at different times and
which would be threatened if pagans joined the community without being asked
to submit to circumcision and to other Jewish traditions such as the food
laws.
Concerns about the financial viability of the local Jewish community and
about
the relationship with the Jewish commonwealth in
as well.

During the past decade, socio-rhetorical interpretation has incorporated
insights
from cognitive science into its interpretive model. The result has been an
emphasis
on “rhetography,” inviting interpreters to give more explicit attention to
the
mental images evoked by a particular text, and “conceptual blending,”
inviting
interpreters to consider what conceptual frames are evoked by these images
and
how these larger frames supply premises that advance argumentation. This
mode
of analysis is especially promising in regard to uncovering the
argumentative
force of narrative and pictorial/visionary texts, like Revelation, that
contain relatively
few explicit indications of argumentation. The present study undertakes
an exploration of Rev 14:6–13 with a view to demonstrating these
interpretive
tools at work and assessing their promise for interpretation.
