Associate Director of Scholars Initiative

Museum of the Bible


Supporting the museum’s mission to invite all people to engage with the Bible, the Associate Director of Scholar’s Initiative is a research expert who develops and implements strategy for the Scholars Initiative, including research projects, programs, and publications. This position works closely with the director on all aspects of the Scholars Initiative to plan and manage projects sponsored by the museum. The incumbent is expected to have a strong publishing history and to continue to research and publish as a scholar in a field related to the museum’s permanent collection.


  • Assists the director in providing concept oversight and operational direction to the museum’s Scholars Initiative program in all its various aspects (encompassing both its research activities and developmental programs), including responsibility for budgetary, personnel, program, planning and liaison functions
  • With museum leadership and the director, develops a renewed vision and strategy for the Scholars Initiative in keeping with the museum’s mission and goals
  • In conjunction with the director, reports progress and completion of projects to the Chief Curatorial Officer
  • In conjunction with the director, develops, directs and oversees research projects on the Museum Collections and related projects
  • Assists the director in editing the Publications of Museum of the Bible (PMB) monograph series published by Brill
  • Researches objects in the Museum Collections and disseminates findings through peer-reviewed publications, lectures, gallery talks, labels, web-based media and other forms of communication
  • Ensures that all research projects conform to ASOR, SBL, ICOM and AAM standards for cultural heritage 
  • As interest and expertise permits, participates in the process of developing content for temporary and permanent exhibitions
  • Develops and maintains relationships with scholars and cultural leaders in areas represented in the collections
  • Attends, participates in and presents at professional conferences; stays abreast of new trends and innovations within the academic community
  • Ensures compliance with various laws and regulations pertaining to collection items
  • The expectation is that the individual in this position becomes Director of the Scholars Initiative within two years of the start date.


  • Ph.D. in a field related to the Museum Collections

Required Qualifications

  • Strong record of peer-reviewed publications
  • Commitment to the museum’s mission of inviting all people to engage with the Bible
  • Ancient and modern language expertise in the relevant area
  • Previous teaching, research and administrative experience
  • Experience working collaboratively as part of a team and supervising staff
  • Ability to plan and deliver work and projects to budget and schedule

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in supervising volunteers, interns and students
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people from all backgrounds


  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Excel, and database software.
