Faculty Job Description
New Testament
United Theological Seminary, Dayton OH

Faculty members are primarily responsible to instruct the students in Christian faith and Spirit-led ministry, weaving their research and scholarly contributions into the life of the classroom, the larger local/connectional community, as well as their scholarly disciplines of formation.

Teaching competency shall be understood to include introductory level courses in New Testament and (potentially) Early Christianity, as well as consultation with a Doctor of Ministry cohort and contributions to the ThD program. Creation of the occasional elective is also expected. Facility in a variety of pedagogical modalities is required for teaching, evaluating, and advising students—in-person, hybrid, and online (synchronous and asynchronous). A normal load for a full-time faculty member at United Seminary is traditionally five (5) courses a year plus advising.

The Faculty at United oversees the establishment and resourcing of curricular and degree requirements for Masters and Doctoral level programs. Well-steeped in the relational ethos of the Evangelical United Brethren Church and a decades long contextual formation curriculum, United invites faculty members to learn they are more than their classroom presence or research contributions further afield. They are bearers of both the vision and mission of United, overseeing standards and policies for admission, retention, and graduation of students. Through shared governance, the Faculty contributes its gifts alongside the Board, Administration, and Staff toward the wellbeing of the local and global communities in which we serve.

Criteria of successful faculty performance at United include the following:

a. Effectiveness in teaching, as discerned through student evaluations and program assessments.
b. Continued professional growth as evidenced through research, publication, professional guild participation, and/or sabbatical projects.
c. Effectiveness in individual service to students, such as counseling, advising, and prayerful supervision.
d. Effectiveness in cooperation with colleagues, in both formal and informal settings.
e. Effectiveness in campus and faculty governance responsibilities and service to the school such as representing the school and assisting in special projects or events.
f. Ecclesial service through community participation, church work, and/or ecumenical responsibilities.

Exercise of additional gifts or offerings toward research, teaching, and other contributions to a Spirit-led life toward faithful Christian leadership formation at United can also be negotiated with the Academic Dean.
